Protecting Our Kids
How Sex Offender Laws Are Failing Us

My name is Emily Horowitz, and here is my personal website. I am a sociologist, and the author of Protecting Our Kids? How Sex Offender Laws Are Failing Us (Praeger, 2015). I’m interested in promoting research to promote rational and reasonable approaches to laws that pertain to sex offenses. In particular, my work analyzes the way that panic, fear, and emotion rather than evidence and data, drives a vast array of increasingly harsh policies that govern those convicted of sex offenses. I am also a Professor of Sociology and Criminal Justice at St. Francis College in Brooklyn, NY, where I teach classes, run a lecture series for the Brooklyn community, and co-direct a program for the formerly incarcerated to complete college.
